If you suffer with pain, numbness and/or weakness in the hands and wrists, you may be diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Severity predicts the misery level, from annoying to completely disabling and requiring surgery. This condition occurs when pressure is put on the nerves in the wrist as they pass thru a ‘tunnel’ created by the ligaments. The pinched nerve causes severe pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand and can even become damaged chronically leading to disability. There are numerous causes of this condition and fortunately many/most will respond with conservative treatment, yet carpal tunnel surgery is still far too common. Keep reading this post to learn how most CTS sufferers can avoid surgery using natural, non-surgical methods that are safer and just as effective here…
There are many reasons why pinched nerves occur in the wrist and most are not addressed with surgery. Swelling can occur in the carpal tunnel from overuse, a direct blow (or series of blows) and fluid weight gain. You can also injure/sprain the ligaments in the wrist and this can contribute to swelling pressing on the nerves. Mechanical obstruction occurs frequently from misalignment of the carpal bones; this reduces space in the tunnel causing the nerve pressure symptoms.
Sometimes problems up the chain are delivering the symptoms at the wrist…. And there is nothing wrong with the wrist. Misalignments, swellings and ligament problems in the elbows, shoulders and even the spine can all produce weakness, numbness/tingling in the hands and wrists, mimicking CTS. Surgery that consists of ‘releasing’ the pressure by cutting some of the ligaments of the wrist often only provides temporary relief because it doesn’t address any of these causes. It also leaves behind disfiguring and less functional scar tissue in an already very small, compact area.
Since there are so many causes of CTS/symptoms, most of which are mechanical in nature, it makes sense to include a good chiropractor in your evaluation. The chiropractor is the doctor who will find and fix all the alignment problems. Combined with a good rehab program to strengthen/balance all the ligament/muscular issues and include cold laser, most carpal tunnel patients can avoid surgery.
