Once someone goes thru a bad enough bout of low back pain, they’re usually pretty interested in learning how to prevent it from happening again. If you want to keep your back healthy and prevent low back pain from keeping you down, here are some useful tips:
- Train your core + exercise regularly.
Sitting all the time is hard on your low back and will aggravate a disc problem. Movement on the other hand, generally helps a swollen disc by pumping the fluid in and out; simply walking for a few minutes helps do this. If you want to avoid low back conditions, the best way to strengthen your lower back is by building your core musculature, namely the obliques by physical training.
- Ice or nothing.
If you hurt your lower back, do not rush to the heating pad as treatment. In most cases of even mild to severe low back pain, it’s a swollen disc that’s to blame. The disc is a ligament and only gets more swollen when heated. While heat may relax musculature, it tends to make swollen discs (and pinched nerve problems) more angry. If you don’t know the cause of your low back pain, err on the side of caution and treat it like a sprained ligament (disc) – use ice, not heat.
- Get a chiropractic check-up
Chiropractors are not only trained to correct spinal problems, but also to find them. Most good chiropractors can find spinal problems before they cause back pain and can head them off at the pass. Doing this saves many patients from suffering and staves off bouts of low back pain. You can prevent most low back pain by visiting the chiropractor 2-3 times/year even if you’re not having symptoms. If you have any type of regular pain or limiting stiffness in the low back (even very short term), you should have a chiropractic check-up immediately.
